SHARJAH: Openers Khurram Manzoor and Ahmed Shehzad batting steadily to provide a sound start to help Pakistan build a big total in reply to Sri Lanka’s 428-9 in the first innings.
Both batsmen made 85 runs without being separated adding 66 runs in the first session on third day of the third and final Test here at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
At lunch, Ahmed Shehzad was batting on 42 and Khurram Manzoor was 41 not out as Pakistan trail by 343 runs with all wickets intact in the first innings.
Both openers have so far hit four boundaries each in Pakistan's first 50-plus opening partnership during the three-Test series.
Pakistan are in a tight corner to level the series after losing the second Test by nine wickets at Dubai.
Yesterday, debutant Dilruwan Perera and captain Angelo Mathews just missed centuries before Sri Lanka declared their first innings.
Perera made a brilliant 95 with 12 fours and two sixes in his Test debut and Mathews was out for a more pedestrian 91 with five fours and a six.
