Tharoor admitted to AIIMS, hours after wife found dead

New Delhi: Union minister Shashi Tharoor was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi late last night after he complained of chest pain, just hours after his wife Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor was found dead at the five-star The Leela Palace Hotel in the city.

Mrs Tharoor's body was shifted to the same hospital early this morning for a post-mortem test. She was found dead two days after she said she was deeply disturbed by an alleged affair her husband was having with a Pakistani journalist. The two were married in 2010, the third wedding for both of them. Mrs Tharoor has a 21-year-old son from an earlier marriage.

A Sub-Divisional Magistrate is investigating the death as the couple were married for less than seven years. He reportedly spoke to Mr Tharoor post mid-night and recorded his statement. Mrs Tharoor's iPhone and iPad have been seized for investigation by the forensic team. Details of her phone calls and Twitter account are reportedly also being checked.

According to sources, Mrs Tharoor contacted the hotel staff around 3.30 pm on Friday. The police have questioned the hotel staff and have checked the CCTV footage of the third floor lobby. Sources said no suicide note has not been found in Mrs Tharoor's room.
Early on Friday morning, a tweet by Mrs Tharoor in response to someone who wished her well said "will try got so many issues diagnosed in KIMS that know who knows when I got 2 go with joy Hastay hua jayegay (sic)." From Sunday till Tuesday, she was reportedly in Kerala along with Mr Tharoor and had got some medical-check-ups done details of which are not known as of now.

The minister and his wife had checked into the hotel because their home was being painted, his assistant had said. Mr Tharoor reportedly returned to the suite at The Leela at 8:30 pm on Thursday after spending the day at the mega-conclave organised by his party, the Congress. When Mrs Tharoor didn't open the door to her bedroom, he asked the hotel staff to help him enter the room.

On Wednesday, in a series of tweets, Mrs Tharoor accused Pakistani reporter Mehr Tarar of "stalking" the minister.
