Tennis - Sloane Stephens survives Croatian Tomljanovic to move into the third round of Australian Open

Tennis - 12 months ago, American Sloane Stephens made her big run to the semi finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne. On Thursday, Stephens was nearly shown the door in the second round but she hung tough and escaped into the third round with a topsy-turvy win over Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic.
Stephens led 3-0 in the final set when play was suspended due to the heat. When the player came back, Tomljanovic won 5 games in a row to go up 5-3. Then it was Stephens who came back to win four games in a row and win the set 7-5.
Speaking after her win, Stephens commented, "It was a little shaky for you guys, I’m sorry… but I’m so happy to be back here; thank you for supporting me. She just played some really good tennis to get back in the third, and I’m just happy I upped my game … Glad I got the win.”
Stephens now meets Ukrainian teen Elina Svitolina in the third round. Svitolina defeated Australian Olivia Rogowska 6-4, 7-5.
In other matches on Thursday, fifth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat Olga Govortsova 6-0 7-5; 25th seeded Alize Cornet beat Italian Camila Giorgi 6-3 4-6 6-4; Austrian Yvonne Meusburger beat Serb Bojana Jovanovski 3-6 6-3 6-2; eighth seed Jelena Jankovic beat Ayumi Morita 6-2 6-0; and 29th seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Mandy Minella 6-2 6-2.
